THREAD MEMORY PROJECT
The Thread Memory Project is a multi-year interdisciplinary project addressing the gendered role of threadwork as a signifier of identity and agent of cultural continuity in the Armenian diaspora. A combination of archiving, researching, writing, and responsive art making, the Thread Memory Project traces the lineage of Armenian needlelace and other forms of handwork and their relationship to memory and postmemory through multiple methodologies, including an inventory of textile heirlooms and family photographs, survey of existing scholarship, research in private and public collections, field research and interviews, and hands-on instruction with experts in the field. This inquiry seeks to unpack the transition in meaning from a female domestic expression to a statement of cultural resistance.
